OBJECTIVES
The LSS works to promote law and policy making based on principles of equal rights and respect for all. The LSS believes that this can influence social attitudes and will help to eliminate discriminatory and negative attitudes towards others in society.
The LSS believes that progressive law and policy should not be based on religion and belief. Decisions should be made on objective evidence, not on beliefs in supernatural influences. In this way the rights of all members of society will be better protected and no group will can impose their beliefs on others.
The LSS believes that the right to manifest religion or belief does not permit interference with the fundamental rights of others. The right of all members of society to live free from discrimination and to have equal access to employment, to education and services always comes first.
The LSS believes that the expression of religious belief is entitled to no greater protection or respect than any other form of belief. Defence of freedom of speech and expression is central to the work of the LSS.
The LSS works to promote law and policy making by organising lectures and debates and other educational activities. It provides advice and assistance to members of the public who claim to have been subjected to disadvantage for a reason based on religious privilege, or who have been subject to a claim asserting a right to religious privilege. The LSS seeks to raise awareness and where appropriate to lobby lawmakers about the issues raised by discrimination founded on religious privilege.
